Jonathan S. Katz

Jon’s practice is focused on the motion picture and television industry, representing a broad range of entertainment clients in both the scripted and unscripted space, including award-winning film and television distribution and production companies, television studios, directors, writers, and producers. He has structured, negotiated, and drafted countless deals for the acquisition, development, finance, production, and distribution of motion picture, television, and new media projects, and the exploitation of ancillary rights across all platforms. Jon has extensive experience negotiating and drafting a vast range of entertainment agreements for rights acquisition, producer, director, writer, actor, composer, financing, production, sales agency, distribution, and licensing agreements for merchandising, comic books, graphic novels, literary publishing, music publishing, new media, and video games.
Jon earned his BA at Columbia University and he is a graduate of Boston University School of Law, where he was an editor of the Law Review. After practicing corporate, entertainment, and technology law at Richards & O’Neil, LLP (later merged into Morgan Lewis, LLP), he joined acclaimed independent production company Pressman Film (producer of iconic films such as Badlands, Conan the Barbarian, The Crow, Wall Street, Bad Lieutenant, American Psycho, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) as Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, ultimately rising to Chief Operating Officer and Head of Production, where he oversaw all aspects of the company’s operations and business and legal affairs across all phases of the development, finance, production, sales, and distribution of scripted and unscripted feature films and episodic series. Jon left Pressman Film to found The Law Office of Jonathan Katz in 2020.
